Sustainabillity
Through the arts
In coming years, resourse managment will, alongside timeframes and budget, demand our attention as we plan and design our productions. However, we still lack concrete goals and structures as to how this new framework should be applied.
Initially a transition to sustainable production might cost more, both in terms of time and resources. Eventually a circular production model could free up valuable resources. This could help us retain unique competences and hold forth the performing arts and its production methods as a model for restructuring in a world in transition. This is a positive development. To resist change and refuse adaptation to sustainable methods and materials is not an alternative.
We don’t need to agree on the scale of risks that climate change will pose, but we can agree to trust the science behind recent predictions and to take these seriously. We can, both as individual practitioners and within our organisations, increase awareness and define clear goals. Work towards a climate-friendly transition should take place on four planes simultaneously: individual, institutional, educational, and political. We need to do this now, to meet the demands of the future while we still can make a difference.

Climate: The story of our Lives.
Annika Bromberg 2021, Stockholm University of Performing Arts.

Which institution can today say “no” to an artist who wants to work with sustainability?
Sustainability in performing arts
Author: Annika Bromberg
Finally, it was the fires that plagued Sweden during the summer of 2018 that spurred my awakening. Our forests were burning, and I found it impossible to close my eyes to the fact that climate change was, without a doubt, a significant threat. The lack of knowledge or concrete tools applied to sustainability in the performing arts led me, in the autumn of 2020, to enroll in a master’s degree programme in International Performing Arts at the Stockholm University of the Arts (SHK). I chose to investigate what concrete tools performing artists, institutions and industry organisations in Sweden, Denmark and Norway had presently at their disposal, and how strategic sustainability work could be organized and initiated. My year of study culminated in a paper; Klimatet, vår viktigaste berättelse [Climate, our most important story].
